UNICEF UK Baby Friendly – BSc Midwifery/MSc Midwifery Re-accredited

Breastfeeding

Our BSc MIdwifery and MSc Midwifery programmes have both been successfully re-accredited as UNICEF UK Baby Friendly.

The UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative provides a framework for the implementation of best practice by NHS trusts, other health care facilities and higher education institutions, with the aim of ensuring that all parents make informed decisions about feeding their babies and are supported in their chosen feeding method. Facilities and institutions that meet the required standards like UWS, are assessed and accredited as Baby Friendly. See http://www.unicef.org.uk/BabyFriendly/ for more details.

Implementing Baby Friendly standards is a proven way of increasing breastfeeding rates. It also means that the health professionals that we train are highly capable of giving mothers the support, information and encouragement they need.

Congratulations to the Midwifery team and a special thanks to all the students who took part in the assessment process on Thursday the 14th and Friday the 15th of May.

UWS was one of the first organisations to commit to this initiative in 2005 and our Midwifery programmes have been accredited  as Baby Friendly since June 2007.
