Dr Karen Watchman last week spent four days in Tawian at the invitation of the University of Kaohsiung and the University of Tainan in association with the ‘Children Are Us’ Foundation.
Children Are Us Foundation (喜憨兒文教基金會) is a charity for people with an intellectual disability in Taiwan. It was founded by parents of people with intellectual difficulty in 1995. The goal for this organization is to inspire and promote the potential talent of people with an intellectual or developmental disability. It is a ‘not for profit’ private organization which provides long term care and job training to people with Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, multiple dysfunction and other mental illness
Karen delivered three-hour guest lectures on learning disability and dementia to over 500 attendees from practice, academia and families. Karen said
‘…in addition to delivering lectures, I was very fortunate to be shown around care facilities and social enterprises employing people with a learning disabilities’
