The University is delighted to be supporting the Westfield Health British Transplant Games, which take place in North Lanarkshire next year.
UWS is a key sponsor of the games which were officially launched at an event at Colzium House on 23 November 2016. The University will provide a range of support during the event and its staff and students are excited to be a part of the Games.
The annual Games, which are being held at venues across North Lanarkshire from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 July 2017, are a celebration of life and encourage transplant patients to regain fitness. They also play a key role in increasing awareness of the need for more people to join the Organ Donation Register.
With around 750 transplant athletes expected to participate, the Games will see transplant survivors, including children as young as two, compete in more than 20 sports. Some attend with the hope of being selected to compete at the World Transplant Games. Others compete simply for the camaraderie of being with others who are also benefitting from a successful organ donation.
Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor at UWS, said:
“We are delighted to be supporting North Lanarkshire Council in the delivery of the Westfield Health British Transplant Games 2017. At UWS we are committed to making a difference to the communities that we serve and it is hugely rewarding to be able to make an important contribution to this prestigious sporting event. This four-day event will showcase not only the determination and bravery of participants but also the courage of donor families and show the importance of sport for all, especially in rehabilitation.”
The British Transplant Games are the flagship project of the charity Transplant Sport and have been in existence for over 30 years when the first “Transplant Olympics” took place in Portsmouth in 1978. At that time, these Games were an international event and included teams from France, Greece and even the USA. Since these early beginnings, the Games have grown and are held every year in different cities throughout the UK.
