U3A is a self-help organisation for people who are no longer in full-time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment.  It consists of local U3As all over the UK, which are charities in their own right and are run entirely by volunteers.  U3A Paisley will be based at the University’s Paisley Campus as part of the University’s partnership working approach and its commitment to advance learning for all.

Local U3As are learning cooperatives which draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. The teachers learn and the learners teach. Between them U3As offer the chance to study over 300 different subjects in such fields as art, languages, music, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts and photography.

A typical U3A has about 250 members but could be as small as 12 and as large as 2000.

The U3A approach to learning is ‘learning for pleasure’.  There is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained.

Meg Dunn of the University’s External Engagement team said:

“As a strong advocate of lifelong learning we are delighted to be hosting this launch event at our Paisley Campus. The U3A provides a hugely important opportunity for older people to keep on learning and expand their knowledge in their retirement.”

Ed Link, Member of Perth U3A and National Executive Council Trustee for Scotland, said: “We are delighted to be launching the U3A in Paisley – there are already 47 U3As in Scotland with 100s more throughout the UK.  With nearly 1 million people over 65 in Scotland, there is a huge need for organisations such as the U3A. Retirement can be a lonely time but it can also be the most invigorating and rewarding of times.  The difference is what you do, how you do it and who you choose to do it with.  The great thing is the choice of what kind of retirement you have is entirely down to the individual.  U3A is a self-help organisation where you can meet new people and do new things, maybe something that you have always wanted to do but just have not had the time.  And what’s more in these days of services disappearing through cutbacks or having to pay ever increasing charges, the U3A self-help model means it only costs a few pounds a year to join and participate in a huge range of interests and pastimes.”
