Men in Nursing. Perceptions Need to be Changed
On Tuesday the 28th of August Dr James Taylor – Senior Lecturer for Mental Health, based at our new Lanarkshire Campus spoke at the RCN Scotland event held at Glasgow Caledonian University that looked at the issue or attracting men into the nursing profession. James is part of the Scottish Collaboration for the Enhancement of Pre-registration Nursing (SCEPRN) team involved in researching the influences and causes of the under-representation of men in pre‐registration nursing across Scotland.
James was participating in an event called “Nursing, a career for men: myths, challenges and solutions” talking about the factors and influences that cause this poor representation. The work of the SCEPRN on this topic was recently published by NHS Education for Scotland and the findings that James was discussing with other colleagues can be found here Men in Nursing Report
Dr Heather Whitford, from the University of Dundee’s School of Nursing and Health Sciences and co-author of the report, has said that
“..attracting more men into nursing is a huge challenge, but the report provides us with key insights as to how we can increase the numbers of males entering the profession. By introducing more gender-neutral narratives we can show the potential of nursing as a worthwhile and rewarding career, regardless of gender.”
