Winners of the Best Community Support Initiative in Scotland’s Dementia Awards 2018

Posted on

On the 20th of September, the day before World Alzheimer’s Day 2018, Bridging the Gap Between Acute and Community Care, a joint initiative involving NHS Ayrshire and Arran, Alzheimer Scotland and our school here at UWS, achieved success by winning Scotland’s Dementia Award for the Best Community Support Initiative, 2018.

This initiative was developed with the aim of establishing a referral process which would enable people living with dementia and their families and carers to have access to individualised dementia specific support and advice from an Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Advisor. By working in partnership with acute care staff the initiative has enabled people living witn dementia and their families to feel supported in making decisions about their care and has facilitated many successful discharges home directly from hospital.

Fantastic work team!

Corinne Hutton Prepares for Kilimanjaro at UWS Lanarkshire

Posted on

UWS Honorary Doctor, Corinne Hutton, is using our Lanarkshire Campus’s new Extreme Environments Laboratory to prepare for an 11-day hike to the summit of Kilimanjaro, which will see her raise money to reduce social isolation for amputees.

The Great Scot award winner and founder of the Finding Your Feet charity – who lost both her hands and legs below the knee after suffering from acute pneumonia and septicaemia – will use the cutting-edge facility at our new Lanarkshire Campus to test her physical fitness and help inform her during her final period of altitude training. Corinne will begin her 90km trip in Tanzania on September 29 and aims to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro on October 6, fundraising for her charity, Finding Your Feet, which supports families affected by amputation or limb difference through a range of sporting initiatives and social inclusion projects.

Our Extreme Environments Laboratory houses one of only two such high-specification environmental chambers in Scotland – and is the only one in the West of Scotland. The chamber replicates environmental extremes, from walking in the desert to standing on one of the world’s highest mountains and can be used by athletes to improve physical performance in the run-up to large sporting events, such as the Olympics in 2020 and the World Cup in 2022. The chamber is an important asset for the University, enhancing students’ experience and enabling us to forge research partnerships and collaborations within industry and academia. Businesses and the public will also be able to access the chamber and take part in altitude training sessions.

Professor Craig Mahoney said:

“Corinne Hutton is an inspiration to many of us, and it’s truly amazing that she’s going to climb Africa’s tallest mountain for her charity, Finding Your Feet. We will be supporting Corinne all the way, and we hope that our new laboratory will help her prepare for the challenge ahead, and that she’ll be the first of many to use our new, state-of-the-art facility. From students and staff at UWS, we wish Corinne the very best of luck.”

Corinne Hutton said:

“Following an infection in 2017 I had the majority of one of my lungs removed, so dealing with the altitude on Kilimanjaro has been a worry for both me and my family. The fact that UWS can offer this fantastic, state-of-the-art facility to help me get an understanding of how I’ll deal with the conditions is just incredible. UWS has been a great supporter of Finding Your Feet, and I’m delighted the University can be a part of my trek up the mountain. I’m honoured to be an ambassador for UWS and delighted that they’re so helpful in our goal of reducing isolation within the amputee community and helping those who have been through limb loss to realise their full potential.”

Claire’s Volunteering Story

Posted on Updated on

Claire's Pics 1

While undertaking her BSc in Adult Nursing at Hamilton Campus one of our students Claire Cram also volunteered to work with an organisation called Volunteer Eco Students Abroad, otherwise known as VESA (UK). VESA is an organisation which allows individuals to become involved in humanitarian projects all over the world.

In July 2017 Claire travelled to Laos,  officially the Lao People’s Democratic Republic which is country bordering Thailand and Vietnam in Southeast Asia. While there Claire worked at an elephant sanctuary learning about conservation and responsible tourism. Her trip also involved organising and participating in enrichment and socialisation activities for the elephants. While staying at the Elephant Conservation Centre her team also carried out construction work to build the male elephant a new watering hole. VESA are also involved in working with the local communities so during this trip she also carried out construction work in the local school which involved painting the classrooms. The volunteers also spent time with the children teaching them English and assisting with their learning.

This year during July 2018 she volunteered with VESA again this time travelling to South Africa to carry out more construction, education and conservation work. VESA has been working on a project in Khula Village a small rural settlement next to the Dukuduku Forest on the fringes of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park in Zululand. While there Claire was able to assist with the construction of a home for one of the pooerer families living there, mixing cement, rendering walls and also painting.  VESA were very proud to say that this construction was the first wheelchair-friendly home they have built!

Also in Khula Village, she volunteered to help in a daycare centre for children. The centre is usually run by one lady. She cares for many children, some of whom are orphans. Mama Doris as she is known provides the children with food, water and a safe place to stay. While volunteering at the daycare centre we helped prepare lunches for the children, taught them English and maths and spent time playing games with them and getting to know them.

The conservation work this time consisted of working with the Emdoneni Cheetah Project which assists in breeding and release programmes for the big cats at the centre. While at the cheetah centre we helped to prepare the cheetahs meals which just happened to be zebra!

We also volunteered in the St Lucia Crocodile Centre which monitors the crocodile population in the nearby area, as well as the rehabilitation and release of crocodiles. While here we created a pool for the crocs and built a snake enclosure.

Not what you might expect for a Student Nurse’s Busman’s Holiday!

Many thanks to Claire for sharing her story and the pictures.
